We sing about addiction quite a bit. It something that hits home for us as we've seen a lot of people we care about struggle with it in one form or another. One of our songs "Poison Well," is about feeling of hopeless, trapped in a self injuring cycle. You can listen to it here on YouTube or on Spotify.
Covid-19 has affected human health, prosperity and economic stability all around the world. The United States has seen an estimate of 40 million jobs lost due to this pandemic and with recent spikes in cases the number is expected to go up. It easy to feel hopeless in a time like this and unfortunately many support systems (group addiction counseling, drug court programs, treatment facilities, churches) have been closed or forced to scale back. In the United States we've seen a steady increase in substance abuse this year since February.
Overdoses in The United States in 2020 (compared to 2019)
JAN: -.03%
FEB: +16%
MAR: +18%
APR: +29%
MAY: +42%
Authorities initially thought with closed borders and locked down cities we'd see a decrease in overdoses as supply chains dry but it seems to be the exact opposite. With familiar supply disrupted, many users are seeking out alternative substances from other suppliers. With the decrease in available support and liquor stores being deemed essential, these numbers are expected to continue rising.
Addiction Is A Disease of Isolation
“So much of addiction has nothing to do with the substance itself. It has to do with pain or distress or needs that aren’t being met.”
-Robert Ashford, Addictions Counselor
As humans, we value belonging more than food or shelter. When that is taken from us, we'll try like hell to fill that need any way we can. It's why you can't sleep or don't feel like eating when you're sad. It's powerful and what makes us human. We need each other more than anything.
